We were a little worried how the kids would do with the drive. It was about a 9 hour drive to get up there so we didn't think we could drive it all but we really wanted to make it pretty far that first day. The kids actually did great in the car! We only stopped twice on the way up. Cracker Barrell of course. This is our usual travel stop. It's nice cause the kids can run around on the porch, play checkers, and stretch their legs, but we also get some yummy food!!
We made it to as far as we wanted to go and got a hotel for the night. This ended up being a bigger mistake. Neither of the kids wanted to go to sleep that night with all of us being in one room not to mention they had been sitting in the car all day and just wanted to PLAY!!
In the morning we had a short drive to Elijay, GA where we went to Hillcrest Orchard for a fall festival. The kids had a great time and loved seeing the apple trees! They had a giant slide which Jacob loved and a petting zoo which Allyson was dying to go into. I got a funnel cake and daddy got some cider and life was good!!
We headed to our cabin which was to be only about 3 miles from town and it was.... except it takes you 20 minutes to get there!
I've never been on a more rediculous drive. The dirt/gravel roads we so narrow at times we had to fold in our mirrors so they didn't hit. We had to back up to let another car go by. Never mind that you can't see to back up! Most of the streets aren't marked. The directions said "check your mileage and go 0.7 miles to a steep hill!! Hello, we are on a mountain they are all steep!!
The best part was going down the driveway to the cabin. You turn and suddenly the driveway disappears beneath you! It's like when you are on a roller coaster in the front seat and you get to the top of the hill and can't see where you could possibly be going cause all you can see is sky! Yeah, that was the driveway except you had to see to drive! Jason said he just looked at the fence that was on one side and hoped that it followed the driveway!!
Needless to say we didn't want to make this drive more than we needed to. We also decided that we were a little afraid to make the drive at night so we always made sure we were back before dark and didn't leave in the evenings. It was nice though cause it gave us time to stay in and enjoy the house and our great view.
